I’m Sew Excited! [Free Sewing Pattern]

Its no secret that I’m excitable. I shudder to think just how many exclamation points I have used on his blog in the past several months. I see things, they seem possible and then my imagination takes off. I buy supplies, I chat about a project endlessly and about 75% of the time I finish it. Why only 75%? Because sometimes my imagination is bigger than my skillset.

That’s why this project has taken me SO LONG to complete. You see, when I first saw this AMAZING free Amy Butler pattern in a post over at Sew Mama Sew– I was giddy with possibilities. I went to the fabric store that day, and started cutting that evening. Within 24 hours I had posted this pic to my Facebook.

I chose a heavy outdoor canvas for the outside and a tablecloth fabric for the inside. I’m hoping this will mean I can wipe down the inside when it gets sticky. (My purses always end up sticky!)

If I’d have kept up at that rate, I would have had my purse done in 3 days. But I didn’t. You see, my sewing skills are novice at best. Inevitably I messed something up. I hat to recut and redo peices- sometimes more than once. Then one night, with the liner done, the flap done, and the exterior done, I botched one of the dividers. Frustrated, I set the project aside… for 4 months.

What can I say? Sometimes I just decide I’m not good enough to finish something to my own standards. At that point my excitement gives way to dissapointment and I quit.

It wasn’t until I found the exterior shell a few weeks ago and realized how pretty freaking awesome it looked that my excitement returned. Then- in true Kayla form- I finished the whole thing in another 3 days. Honestly- I can’t believe how well it turned out. I guess I can still surprise myself!

NOTE: I did deviate from the pattern provided on Sew Mama Sew a bit. I added the steel loops and strap attachments- I felt like it needed something shiney on the outside.

To make things easy, HERE’S THE PATTERN.

I wanted some metal on the outside of the purse. So I added a ring and leash claps to attach the straps. (Pattern uses fabric only)
My first zipper EVER! I love the pop of colors on the inside.

  1. I love the way you did the handles! I made this bag and then took it apart cause stuff kept getting stuck underneath the dividers. All in all it was a fun bag, and I love Amy Butler!

  2. I like the ring and leash clasps. I want to make it for a travel purse. With the clasps, I could use it as a fanny pack and put through my belt loops. Can’t wait to get caught up on other projects so I can make this purse.

  3. That’s a fantastic modification and a thoroughly fabulous bag! I adore that fabric you used!

I think the only thing I would possibly change is to use triangular shaped steel rings so it hangs a little better from the leash clips. Brilliant work though 🙂

    1. Kass, you are so right about triangular rings! I didn’t even think of that. Unfortunately the purse is now out of commission. I don’t know if I’m just too hard on them or what, but it wore holes in the bottom of the outdoor fabric :/ Next time!

      1. I have had that same Amy butler bag for a long time with a plan to make it “someday”. Like you I have the fabric purchased as well as all of the interfacing. I actually got it all out yesterday to start on it. I was looking for a bag to also make for my daughter. She wants a beach bag. I found one and am planning to start that as soon as I finish the blossom bag. I think I am worried my skills won’t be quite up to snuff. I guess I will find out.

I picked fabrics with the same grey but also has some bright yellow. My interior is bright yellow too. On the outside, I bought the stuff for it as well. My plan is similar to yours. But not completely sure. I am planning to go one or two ways and that all depends on how well I do with the tubes. My plan is to make the tubes in the bright yellow duck fabric I bought that I am using on the inside as well. They look small and I hate fighting those tiny tubes! I purchased a turn-it all set in the hope that it will make it easier. If that doesn’t work, my back up is to use D rings where you have the rectangles. The ones I bought are not the big ones. They are 1 1/4″ ones. So wish me luck.. hope mine ends up as nice as yours!

  4. Absolutely LOVE the material you picked out! And can totally relate to thinking I can do a project with minimal skills and gets put aside! (May be a Michigan thing as i was born in Flint. LOL) But I think you did a FABULOUS job on this purse and think you should make them to sell!

  5. Georgeous bag, beautiful colors! I love the metal on the side, it was a really creative idea! Thank you for sharing the tutorial!
    Have a great weekend,

  6. Found you on “Making the World Cuter” and PINNING this. I know I’ll enJOY the compartments. Thanks for sharing the pattern too! You did such a great job.
