3D Paper Necklace

Remember those 3D Paper Earrings I made last summer? Well, its been almost a year and they are still going strong. The paper has held up REALLY well, and even though I let one of them sit in a puddle of water by the bathroom sink for several hours- it dried right back to perfection.

So, when I bought this super cool “Lorem Ipsum” necklace from Mod Cloth the other day, my first inclination was to make my own- using the techniques I learned from the paper earrings.

My inspiration

But why stop at words? I mean, its pretty awesome for a Graphic Designer to walk around with Helvetica (a very influential font) hanging around their neck- but what about all my other fave geeky items? As long as I’m making jewelry- I want to make things I can’t buy!

So, that’s what I did. With a little but of brainstorming I decided on Helvetica, Kristy (I gave to my sis), a pixel heart, and a bunny (for Easter!). For less than $10 I made 4 new necklaces! (That’s a lot less than what I paid at Mod Cloth for just the one.)

What you Need:

  • Cardstock
  • Silhouette Cameo, Cricut, or punches in your desired shape.
  • Mod Podge
  • Mod Podge Dimensional Magic
  • Jump Rings and Chain

How To Make It:

I am very pleased to tell you that each of these, start to finish, took me less than 10 active minutes. Granted, my Silhouette was working while I wasn’t, cutting out the shapes.

  1. If using a cutter, load up your paper and cut several of your desired shape- DON’T FORGET HOLES FOR THE CHAIN. I used 10-15 layers for each necklace. If using a punch, punch several of your shape- you’ll add holes for the chain later.
  2. Carefully spread some mod podge on the face of one of the cut outs. Apply a second cut out on top. Repeat, like, 15 times.
  3. Once all layers are glued together, seal the edges with the mod podge.
  4. Lay your pieces on a flat surface, and using the dimensional magic, put a thick layer on them. This will go on cloudy but dry clear. Give it several hours/overnight to cure.
  5. At this point, if you don’t have holes for the jump ring- use an awl or a drill to make them. They don’t need to be too big for a jump ring, but be careful not to poke yourself!
  6. Add the rings and chain! That’s it! Done!

  1. Great minds think alike. I just saw a cute product over at Archiver’s I wanted. There’s is wood, but I was thinking I could easily achieve it using this same concept with glue to build it up. I’m keeping it under wraps until I get it posted. I’ll put a link back to this if you’re good with that!
