I don’t particularly like coffee. What I DO like is what coffee does to chocolate. It makes it taste darker, fuller, and all around more satisfying. But, alas, a lot of people DO like coffee, and because of that, the majority of mocha iced coffees out there are far more coffee and far less chocolate for my taste. All but one. The BK Mocha Joe (now replaced with a less delicious “mocha Iced Coffee”). For weeks I was addicted to that creamy, chocolatey, cold concoction. Then I realized the calorie count. Yup, its over 350 calories a cup. Oh, and did I mention its $3.00 a pop? Still, I had one once in a while as a treat. But then, they replaced it all together and I fell out of love.
For months I’ve tried so hard to make something at home that I would enjoy the same way. I tried chocolate ice cream in milk, chocolate soy milk, regular coffee with tons of creamers and mix-ins. Nothing tasted right. Moreover, none of them were reasonably good for me. Then finally, it hit me. When I tell people about the mocha joe, I used to say “Its like chocolate milk with coffee in it.”
So I took chocolate milk and put coffee in it.
Yup. 150 calories a glass, 1% chocolate milk is reasonably good for me. Honestly, the protein and milk fat in it is WAY better than some of the other “treats” I give myself. Add in 1/2 tsp instant coffee and its perfect. Deep, dark, chocolatey, cold and creamy- its exactly what I’ve been craving! And so, I’m sharing it with you. =D
(Tip, instant coffee doesn’t like cold liquid. So take 1 tsp of the milk and mix it with the coffee into a paste. Gradually add a little more milk until its a thin syrup. THEN you can add it to the glass.)
