Its officially December. For me, December means a great deal of things. There’s the usual Christmas, and Holiday parties. There’s shopping for gifts, wrapping and decorating. December is also my birthday (precisely one week before Christmas) – so that’s thrown into the mix. December means seeing people I haven’t seen in a while, catching up and promising to stay in touch this time.
This year, however, I’m going to add another thing to my December: Sacrifice.
This month is so focused on extravagances that it is easy for me to lose focus. I eat more than I should, I spend more, procrastinate more, day dream and laze about more. I spend my birthday indulging my own every whim with a whole new outfit, a trip to a fancy restaurant. I eat 5 different desserts at each holiday party. I hit snooze another 3 times as the weather turns colder. I walk less, eat more and overall do more of the unimportant things, and less of the important ones.
So this month, I’ve made a pledge. I’m going to treat this like a mini lent. During the advent season I am going to give up on some things. Also- I’m going to commit to some things. Its my way of remembering I CAN make sacrifices, even in the midst of all of this extravagant living. It also helps me remember Jesus during the season. After all, lent and Easter are the place where this Christmas story ends. And isn’t that what is important? Hooray! The Savior is born! But he is born to die. For me. The least I can do is lay off on the cheesecake and do a few jumping jacks.
How about you? How do you keep your center during this season?
