A few weeks ago, my landlord removed the old deck off our back door and put up a new one. The people he hired to do this job, however, neglected to remove the pile of twisted old wood from the previous deck. Well, for a couple weeks I stewed about it – angry, thinking about the nails that might be in it. Thinking of the animals that might next beneath it.
Then, I thought about getting proactive. The wood was just lovely, at least 40 years old and tongue and groove. I explained to my husband how lovely I thought that it was, and he took over from there.
How We Made It:
- We started with this ugly table for $10 at a thrift store. It was super outdatedand generally ugly- but we liked the shape.
- My husband chose the boards and cut them to fit. He cleaned them off, but didn’t sand them yet.
- My hubby removed the original top of the table and scuffed off the paint from the frame.
- I found this excellent image from The Graphics Fairy, and printed it large across several sheets of paper. I taped together the papers so make the full image, and colored the whole back with white chalk.
- I placed the paper on the arranged boards and used a scoring tool to trace the outlines of the text.
- I removed the paper, leaving just the chalk outline.
- Next, I painted in the image as best I could.
- When the paint was dry, my hubby sanded each board until it was no longer rough, and the paint looked old and worn. Then, he assembled the boards on the table and glued them in place.
- When the glue was dry, we coated the whole thing in linseed oil.

Ha! I’m so glad you like it. Aside from the fact that it still smells like linseed oil- I freaking love it. =D
